Many insurance companies will cover the cost of treatment for varicose veins. However, guidelines must be followed before any treatment can be provided. “Medical necessity” needs to be met. This is based upon the patient’s history, symptoms and diagnostic ultrasound findings. In addition, most insurance carriers require 6 weeks to 3 months of “conservative treatment” before any procedures can be performed. “Conservative treatment” includes but is not limited to: wearing medical gradient compression stockings daily, elevating the legs, walking, weight reduction, exercise, and the use of analgesics or NSAIDS. You will need to return to our office for followup during and/or after this time period. As a reminder, deductibles, coinsurance and copay obligations apply.
Spider veins are considered cosmetic, and treatment for these are usually not covered by insurance.
